Aldi Gympie set to expand, become one of biggest in Qld

BARGAIN hunters will soon have more room to shop and more groceries to choose from, with ALDI Australia confirming yesterday it would add to its Gympie operation.

Tenders have been called for the expansion of the Hyne St supermarket, which will make the Gympie store one of the biggest in Queensland.

An ALDI spokesman said yesterday the expansion would offer customers greater convenience, with an improved store layout and 400sq m of additional retail space.

"This will make ALDI Gympie one of our largest locations in Queensland, reflecting the strong support the store receives from the local community," the spokesman said.

The expansion project is out to tender, with submissions closing next month and expected to be awarded within four weeks.

Work will then take place progressively during 2016, with the store remaining open to customers at all times during the renovations.

"ALDI is working closely with the local council, other businesses and community groups to ensure the changes to our Gympie store will positively impact the local area," the spokesman said.

"Along with award-winning grocery products, popular special buys and fresh fruit, vegetables and bread delivered daily, the store will provide up to 20 full- and part-time permanent positions in the local community."

Among the conditions imposed by Gympie Regional Council in granting approval was that ALDI expand the cul-de-sac in Hyne St to provide more room between the access to ALDI and the access to McDonald's.

ALDI has operated internationally for more than 50 years, with the first Australian store opened in 2001.

There are more than 300 stores across New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Victoria.
