Happy Gaze full of praise after first coaching win

BASKETBALL: Andrew Gaze didn't have much time to bask in the glory of his first win as an NBL coach.

His Sydney Kings beat the Illawarra Hawks 88-84 in Wollongong on Thursday night.

But the seven-time NBL MVP and five-time Olympian had to turn his focus immediately to Sydney's home clash with the Cairns Taipans tonight.

"It's a very limited time to recover and we don't have a lot of time to prepare,” he said.

"All teams have to do it. I'm not crying and saying we've been harshly done by, but it does make it tough.”

Gaze said he was happy for the players with the win over the Hawks.

"I've had more than my fair share of unbelievable times and now I've got this opportunity to share in some more in a different capacity,” he said.

"Whatever this journey of mine is, I just want the players to enjoy the experience, to be able to enjoy the wins and deal with the losses.”

The Taipans are coming off an 84-74 loss to Perth in round one.

Cairns' former Kings and Hawks point guard Jarrad Weeks was wary of Sydney.

"They have got a lot of tough players, a lot of smart players,” Weeks told the Cairns Post.

"They recruited very well in the off-season.

"They are going to be a tough team. We will have a good plan from the coaches and we will trust that system.”
