RUNNING into burning buildings, cutting people from cars and paddling through fast running water - if these all sound like a good time, then there is a job available for you.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service is calling for new recruits to pull on the helmet and become a firefighter.

Maryborough senior firefighter Adrian Massingham encouraged those who were thinking about joining the crew to apply.

"Definitely do it," he said.

"It's a challenging job which offers diversity of roles."

Adrian said call outs could entail road crash rescue, house and grass fires, swift water rescue, rescuing people from heights or precarious situations and fire alarms.

Firefighters also provide education in schools, building inspections and community work.

He has been a firefighter for the past eight years after a stint as a police officer.

"Coming from the police, you still have that emergency response work and thought process," he said.

Adrian said a part of what attracted him to the role was the diversity of jobs done on a day-to-day basis.

"It keeps it fresh," he said.

"You don't know what you are going to get."

QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said they were looking for people who had a passion to serve the community.

"We want the best of the best in our community to become firefighters and enrich our organisation with their skills," she said.

Ms Carroll said a new recruitment system meant applicants can track their application.

How to apply

  • Applications for recruit firefighters close on December 20.
