Hussey backs Handscomb as future captain

THE accolades aren't slowing down any time soon for Peter Handscomb.

Not only did he become the first Australian to score four consecutive Test 50s on debut since Herbie Collins (1920-21), but eclipsed Michael Hussey's average of 88.40 after four Tests.

Handscomb is in uncharted territory.

And now there's talk he could be Steve Smith's heir apparent.

It's a lot of pressure to heap on the 25-year-old, but Hussey told Fox Sports Handscomb had the temperament to become an Australian great.

"I hear some people out there saying he's going to be the next captain of Australia. And, you know, I think down the track he probably will be,” he said.

"He'll grow into that role and take over from Steve Smith. But let's not put too much pressure on him at this stage. Let him enjoy this success because I'm sure there'll be a few blips and bumps along the way.

"But he's been outstanding. He should embrace it as much as he can at the moment.”

After Handscomb's knock of 110 on Wednesday - his second century in four Tests - the Victorian's average skyrocketed to 89.75.

His blistering start to his Test career has proven detractors - who alleged his unorthodox batting style wouldn't stand up - wrong, and only enhanced the opinions of those who backed him.

And one of Australia's greatest bowlers Glenn McGrath believes it all comes down to Handscomb's mindset.

"I met Pete a few times before he made his debut and he couldn't have asked for a better start to his career and I think it's all about attitude,” McGrath told Fox Sports.

"Skill will take you so far, attitude will take you the rest of the way and these young guys coming in, they seem to have a certain confidence, a certain attitude.

"In respects to Pete, hopefully he'll be there for the long haul and you never know.”
