Jedinak puts himself on the spot

SOCCEROOS captain Mile Jedinak will volunteer to take a penalty if a shoot-out is needed to separate Australia and Honduras tonight.

A 0-0 scoreline after extra time, the same as the first leg in in San Pedro Sula on Saturday, will send the World Cup playoff into the lottery of a penalty competition.

While the 33-year-old said he hadn't been thinking of the prospect of taking a spot kick, he would not back down if needed.

"If I'm on the pitch at the time I'll put my hand up [but] I don't know how it works," he said.

"I know usually sometimes boys offer to put their hand up; who's feeling comfortable and confident at the time is usually how it goes.

"Sometimes you might be told to take them."

Jedinak is Australia's first-choice penalty taker, scoring twice from the spot against Thailand in a 2-2 draw last November and in Melbourne against Japan to force a 1-1 draw.

Australia's inspirational skipper has been struggling with a groin problem and the first leg was his first 90-minute appearance in five months.

Jedinak said the round-the-clock treatment he had received from Socceroos' medical staff would ensure he would be fit to start tonight.

"It was great to get the minutes and see the game through ... after that it was all about recovering and recuperating," he said.
