Jets have flight plan against Sky Blues

SYDNEY FC might have an outstanding record against Newcastle recently but the Jets will be confident of a breakthrough win over their New South Wales rivals at Hunter Stadium today.

Newcastle is winless in its past seven A-League matches against the Sky Blues (drawn two, lost five).

But it appears new Jets coach Scott Miller's magic is already rubbing off on his team.

The Hunter-based outfit was highly impressive in its season- opener, beating Wellington 2-1.

Much of Newcastle's attacking spark came through the combination of Socceroos representative and goalscorer David Carney and Ki-Je Lee down the left flank. Import striker Milos Trifunovic also netted in the win.

After finishing bottom last season, team morale at the Jets has also picked up dramatically.

Miller told supporters at the season launch that pundits writing off his team in the off-season were "disrespectful".

But the Sky Blues were also no slouches in their 1-all draw against Melbourne City, with their new signing, Filip Holosko, scoring.

Skipper Alex Brosque, at 32, also looks fitter than ever.

The absence of Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard (sent off against Wellington) is a big blow, and will force a reshuffle to the team's defence, with Ben Kantarovski a potential replacement.

If Sydney FC avoids defeat, it will be unbeaten in its past 16 A-League away matches in the regular season - no team in A-League history has achieved that before.
