WHILE it may have been a few days early, there was no shortage of respect from the young children at Beck St Kindergarten, as they held their Anzac Day ceremony on Thursday.

The event started with a short five-minute video to introduce the children to the importance of Anzac Day and what it stands for, before a ceremony at the memorial in the playground.

Throughout the week, the children have been hand-crafting their own wreaths and poppies, that they were able to lay at the memorial with their parents.

The ceremony was held in very high regard, as some of the children in the kindergarten have parents in the Defence Force.

Beck St Kindergarten director Nerolie Farquarson said the kindergarten had been doing a small service for as long as she had been working there.

"I have been working here for the last 12 years, and there has been a service every year,” Mrs Farquarson said.

"It allows the children to build an understanding about the Anzacs, but the children do understand the day more than we give them credit for.”

For some of the children at the kindergarten, yesterday was their first experience of an Anzac service.

Mrs Farquarson said the main purpose of the morning was for the kindergarten to slowly introduce the concept of Anzac Day to the children.

"It is important for our younger children to understand the sacrifice made by our forebears,” she said.

"This is a small introduction for them to learn about the sacrifices made, about their history and about their country.”
