Labor to seek a senate inquiry into alleged abuse on Nauru

LABOR'S shadow immigration minister has announced the Opposition would move to set up a Senate Inquiry into allegations of abuse in Australia's offshore detention centres on Nauru and Manus Island.

Shayne Neumann, the member for Blair, told the Guardian newspaper the LNP's response leaked documents alleging abuse within the centres was disgraceful.

Last week, The Guardian published more than 2000 leaked incident reports that showed allegations of sexual abuse against both children and adults, self-harm, assault, poor living conditions and other revelations.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton played down the documents and accused asylum seekers of making up incidents in an effort to get to Australia.

But Mr Neumann, who was appointed the shadow minister for the first time following last month's federal election, said Dutton's response was dismissive and victim-blaming.

He told the Guardian that Labor would act quickly to establish a senate inquiry into conditions in the centres.

"The veil of secrecy around what's happening must be pulled away and that's why we need a senate inquiry," he told the newspaper.

He said the inquiry would be an independent investigator.

"The government can't be trusted to investigate this themselves," he said.

Mr Neumann said attention would be paid to the response of both the companies that run the camps and the government.
