Landmark claim mercantile crown
Bowls: Fierce rivalry and some serious sledging became the norm on the bowling green as a crowd gathered for the bi-annual Mercantile Bowls Competition.
For four weeks Dalby businesses have gone head to head at the Dalby Bowls Club with hopes of claiming the mercantile title and winning the bragging rights.
The final round of the tournament was played on Wednesday, topping off a hotly contested competition.
Landmark claimed the crown this series as the only team winning all four rounds. The Dalby Chiropractors and the Grubb family were hot on their heels, coming second and third respectively.
A Dalby tradition for more than 20 years, the mercantile runs twice a year, bringing businesses together on the bowling green for a four-round social series played on Wednesday nights.
Organiser Keith Teakle said the competition was a major fundraiser for the club and gave new people a chance to try out bowls.
"This round has been very successful,” he said.
"The mercantile is a great money spinner for the club, that's what it's all about and introducing a lot of new people to bowls.”
Teakle said the best part about the friendly competition was getting people out of their comfort zone to try something new.
"It's a lot of fun, just a bit of camaraderie and rivalry between business houses and friends,” he said.
"It's good to see from the first week until now how much their bowls have improved. There's a lot of new players as well as some regulars.”
The Friendly Societies Dispensary was the major sponsor of the event again this year.
The mercantile wraps up play at Dalby Bowls Club for a few months as the green undergoes renovation.
The next round of mercantile will kick off in April with more businesses wanting in on the action.
