Man lucky to be found alive after remote highway crash

A MAN whose car rolled off a remote stretch of highway, pinning him inside for more than two hours, owes his life to a volunteer emergency vehicle driver.

Authorities said the man, 46, was lucky to first be found then rescued from his crumpled vehicle after it rolled 5m down an embankment off the Carnarvon Highway at Wellesley south of Surat about 12.05pm.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said a volunteer emergency vehicle driver was the first on scene and had been travelling in front of the man on the highway.

The spokeswoman said the female driver looked in her rear-vision mirror and noticed the car had disappeared.

Concerned, the woman doubled back on the highway to search for the car when she saw it overturned down an embankment.

The man is believed to have swerved to avoid a kangaroo when he rolled the car.

"It was a difficult extrication that required QFES due to the damage of the vehicle," the QAS spokeswoman said.

"The car couldn't be seen from the highway.

"He's very lucky to have been found."

The impact trapped him inside the overturned vehicle, pinned by his arm and abdomen.

Paramedics and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews arrived on scene soon after but a difficult extrication and rescue mission meant the man wasn't freed from the car for more than an hour and a half.

He was taken by road ambulance to the Surat Airport and later airlifted by RACQ LifeFlight to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition.
