Man pulled from surf at Mooloolaba in near drowning

A MAN has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after a near-drowning at an unpatrolled beach between Mooloolaba and Alex Headland.

The man and two of his friends were caught in a rip off the rocks in front of the Mooloolaba Caravan Park on The Esplanade.

The trio were spotted by a group of friends on holiday from Brisbane and one young woman swam out to assist after one of the men began sinking under the surface.

The Westpac Surf Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was conducting its normal patrols from Noosa to Caloundra and happened to fly over the rescue in progress.

They acted quickly and winched the man to the beach and immediately began CPR.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast Duty Officer Guy Tanner said IRB crews from Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland surf clubs had arrived simultaneously to assist with bringing the other two men to shore.

"We were incident free up until about an hour ago," he said.

"People need to remain vigilant about where they swim and stay away from unpatrolled beaches.

"We were just lucky there was a good response from the general public (in this instance)."
