Man tried to run over cop in 4WD
A FORMER drug addict will be released from jail today after he almost ran over a police officer in his four-wheel drive.
Ipswich man Darryl Reg Albert Hayes, 32, has already spent a year and three months behind bars after he crashed a car twice while trying to escape police and robbed a service station attendant.
Brisbane District Court heard Hayes stole $300 cash and cigarettes from a petrol station in July last year.
He was also involved in a petrol theft at Wacol the following day.
Police were searching for the four-wheel drive used in the petrol theft and found it parked in a driveway at a Holland Park house.
Hayes was in the driver's seat and when police officers asked him to get out he accelerated, crashed into a garden and van and then reversed, narrowly missing a police officer.
An officer shot seven rounds at the four-wheel drive, which missed the driver, and Hayes drove off.
The car was found about a kilometre down the road, crashed into a tree. Hayes had fled.
This morning Hayes pleaded guilty to several charges and was sentenced to a total three and a half years jail, suspended after he'd served 455 days.
He will be released today and will live with his father.
