Melon Festival a hit for all

THE Chinchilla Melon Festival is no longer just for the residents, if 2017's version is anything to go by.

More than 14,000 people from across Australia poured into the Western Downs town on the weekend to ring in the festival, which has run every two years since 1990.

Committee president Doug McNally said he was amazed by the number of people who had come from outside the region to celebrate the event with townspeople.

"We had an unprecedented amount of camping. We had 500 sites at the showgrounds and another 200 at the polocrosse grounds and more at the golf club,” Mr McNally said.

"To have that many people was amazing. Every bed in the joint was taken.

"The community had to realise the festival has got its own life.

"We've had stories like that over the years of people from America coming over to see an iconic festival, then heading straight back.”

The festival also attracted certain celebrities, with The Living Room star and celebrity chef, Miguel Maestre, making an appearance.

He was keen to get up close and personal with the locals, and even tested his balance in the melon skiing.

Up to 22 tonnes of melons were smashed, bashed, skied on or eaten from between Friday and Sunday.
