Mervyn Moriarty and his artwork are returning to Dalby
MANY Western Downs artists are familiar with the styles for Mervyn Moriarty: both artistic and teaching.
Moriarty has travelled to Dalby and beyond many times during his career to teach art workshops and now his works and the local responses to them are being displayed at Gallery107@Dalby.
Gallery107 is working with the Flying Arts Alliance to curate the Dalby stop of Moriarty's exhibition Colour and Response.
The exhibitions grand opening is Friday March 15 at 6pm.
Gallery president Carolyn Tillman said a lot of the artist who started Dalby Regional Art Gallery were artists who had originally attended Moriarty's workshops.
Each stop of the exhibition features work by Moriarty and works chosen by that gallery in response.
For Dalby works by local artists who have been influenced by Moriarty will form the 'response' part of the exhibition.
"We went through our records and found artists that were influenced by Mervyn Moriarty,” Tillman said.
"We've collected three or four of each of their paintings.”
The local art will be displayed on the ground floor of the gallery and Moriarty's pieces will be exhibited upstairs.
Lisa Beilby, exhibitions program lead for Flying Arts Alliance, said Gallery107@Dalby is the second stop for Colour and Response after its stint in Texas.
"The one coming up in Dalby, I was out a couple of weeks ago to help them put it together and work out how we're going to do the hang and have a look at what they'd gathered together and really its a very spectacular exhibition.”
Before Moriarty started the Flying Arts Alliance, Beilby said there was not any body else doing the kind of professional development in the arts.
"Until he got his pilot's licence and got the plane people were really isolated and unable to have someone with professional capacity who was a serious artist go into regional communities and go 'yep, that's beautiful what you're doing there but lets really have a look at it, then let really take this on and be serious about our careers as artists.'”
Moriarty will be among the guest speakers at the grand opening tonight and he will be hosting a master class tomorrow.
Colour and Response will be on display at Gallery107 until May 4.
