Mini in the pilot's seat as brand looks to automotive future

SURE, you look like you should be in the pilot's seat of a Tiger Moth rather than a car, but this is the way of the future according to Mini.

Mini has revealed augmented reality (AR) eyewear at the Auto Shanghai 2015 show which takes head-up vision to a new level.

While many vehicles now come with the head-up displays which projects information onto the windscreen just below the driver's eyeline, AR overlaying the field of vision with supplementary digital information, usually by means of computer generated graphics.

A Mini app runs on the glasses both inside and outside the vehicle.

Inside the vehicle, AR is linked with Mini Connected and operated using controls in the vehicle, such as the steering-wheel buttons. When outside the vehicle, the AR glasses can be operated with the controls on the right temple, comprising a touch-pad on the top and three buttons on the bottom.

While parking, for example, the glasses will show external camera views of the wheels when the driver turns their head toward the appropriate wheel.

Eye-tracking or voice control have not been integrated as yet, but are certainly a feasible option for future applications.

While the technology is still being developed, the system will continue to be developed and honed with the aim of turning the vision into reality.
