Nadal marches on in pursuit of 10th French Open title

RAFAEL Nadal's relentless march towards a 10th French Open title continues after the Spanish enforcer powered to another lopsided win.

The left-hander destroyed compatriot Roberto Bautista-Agut 6-1 6-2 6-2 in just 111 minutes to reach his 31st grand slam quarter-final and 11th in Paris.

Nadal, who celebrated his 31st birthday over the weekend, has conceded just 20 games in four matches to secure his place in the last eight.

Bidding to become the first man to win 10 titles at the same grand slam event, Nadal will next play Pablo Carreno Busta who beat Milos Raonic in a five-set thriller.

Nadal's runaway triumph was his 99th in 101 best-of-five claycourt contests.

Russian beanpole Karen Khachanov has earned a shot at world No 1 Andy Murray after upending American John Isner in the third round.

The emerging baseliner eliminated Isner 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) to earn his first grand slam quarter-final berth.

At 21, Khachanov is the youngest man to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros since US Open winner Marin Cilic, then 20, in 2009.

A quarter-finalist in Barcelona and Lyon in the lead-up to Paris, Khachanov rolled 13th seed Tomas Berdych in the previous round.

His victory over Isner delivered an appointment with world No 1 Murray.

The Russian got tight at 5-3 in the third set tiebreak and briefly shaped to do the same in the fourth set before he settled.

Japanese eighth seed Kei Nishikori barely survived Korean Hyong Chung, advancing 7-5 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 0-6 6-4.

Nishikori takes on Spain's Fernando Verdasco.
