JUST as he thought things could not get any worse, Fremantle Dockers coach Ross Lyon has been told he will be without Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe for the rest of the AFL season.

The Dockers are bottom of the ladder with long-term injuries to star ruckman Aaron Sandilands, defender Michael Johnson and midfielder Harley Bennell.

Now they will be without Fyfe, who is recovering after having surgery last month to insert a plate in his left leg after breaking his fibula in round five against Carlton.

That plate is due to be taken out later this season and is set to be followed by more rehabilitation for the 24-year-old.
General manager of football operations Chris Bond the Dockers had taken the decision on medical advice.

"It's disappointing for Nat and our members and supporters but we will always act in the best long-term interests of a player's health and well-being," Bond said.

"Based on clear medical advice Nat will not be available to play again in 2016.

"He is due to have the plate removed later in the year and will then undergo a carefully planned period of rehabilitation.

"Our medical advice is that if Nat completes the rehabilitation phase without any setbacks he will be fit and available to start the 2017 pre-season on schedule."

The Dockers take on reigning premier Hawthorn in Launceston tomorrow afternoon.

Fyfe suffered a similar injury in the Dockers' preliminary final defeat to the Hawks last season and had a plate inserted at that time.
