‘Naughty and nice’: Brunch bar to shake up cafe scene

From tacos to banoffee waffles, the possibilities are endless at the Coast’s newest brunch and gelato bar which offers customisable naughty and nice meals to cater for “unapologetic unique” and indecisive eaters.

Open along Margaret St, opposite Rick’s Garage in Palmwoods, One Weird Dog Brunch and Gelato Bar specialises in fully customisable brunch boards with a choice of 39 ingredients that can be added to your choice of protein and a selection of brunch meals and gelato.

Owner and chef Ann Vollmer said she hoped to create a dining experience for “weird eaters” such as herself.

“If you ask most people in hospitality, they designed their products of what they want or expect and we do the same,” she said.

“I’m the fussiest eater known to mankind and sometimes I go out for breakfast and I really don’t want breakfast I want to sit down and have a salad or curry, so why should we have to be restricted to having to eat breakfast between such and such a time.

“It’s about giving people the choice.”

Brothers buzzing after innovation challenge success

The Palmwoods local said she was inspired by a Melbourne gelato bar to include the frozen dessert in her business model.

“We used to live in a little town in Bright and there was this little gelato bar down there that did a roaring trade even in the middle of winter,” she said.

“I just fell in love with the concept of having the gelato there, but also being able to offer something that is warn and wholesome to eat.

“You can sit down and have your hot lunch or cold lunch and if you wanted to you could finish the meal with a gelato.”

Smoothies, hot and cold drinks as well as locally made vegan product Koko Twist, enjoyed in a loaded cup with toppings, are also on the menu at One Weird Dog.

Mrs Vollmer, who has previously owned other cafes and accommodation business, said she hoped the bar becomes a “roaring success”.

“Just having the gelato and the cafe style environment, it’s something a little bit different that we don’t have in Palmwoods yet and we have had a huge influx of population, so I thought the town might be ready for something like this.”
