Video captures exploding powerline as motorway shut
UPDATE: The Sunshine Motorway was closed south of Mooloolaba on Thursday due to fallen powerlines on the Nicklin Way.
Phil Roach posted this video of a power pole exploding on the Nicklin Way at Warana.
Across the Sunshine Coast almost 44,000 were left without power last night, including about 9000 in the Noosa council area.
More than 100,000 were without power in Queensland.
Energex has advised residents could face a day-long wait to have their power restored.
On ABC radio on Friday, Division 8 councillor Jason O'prey reported there were trees down across Maroochydore, including many old cotton trees from the Cotton Tree area.
There had been no major flooding however.
Beaches were expected to be closed today.
The council says clean-up crews will be working throughout the day to remove debris from roads.
EARLIER: Nicklin Way has been closed to north-bound traffic after gusty winds brought down powerlines.
Police are turning traffic heading towards Mooloolaba around at Jessica Blvd, Minyama.
South-bound lanes are still open through from the Sunshine Mwy and Mooloolaba.
