Oakey could be on the cusp of a development boom

ALTHOUGH the town of Oakey has received some negative publicity regarding the water contamination issue, its economy could be ready to boom.

Oakey Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Andrew Langton said the town was well positioned to take advantage of upcoming development opportunities.

He said with Oakey Abattoir set to expand, and the government funding a $2.5 million upgrade to the rail siding there was increasing business confidence in the area.

Mr Langton also noted the town would likely take advantage of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing - both during construction and afterwards.

"I'm very sympathetic to the people who are affected and in the long run it's important that they get all the support they need," he said.

Mr Langton said he wanted to ensure the positive aspects of the town were also known.

Yesterday it was revealed a United States regulator changed guidelines regarding the exposure levels of chemicals which have contaminated groundwater.

Mr Langton said it was important for investors to note most residents in the area were supplied by safe water from Toowoomba Regional Council.

He said the major issues affecting business confidence were the prolonged drought and uncertainty from the upcoming election.
