OLSCC are off to see the Wiz
IT'S a cult classic and a film that made history, but now it's Our Lady of the Southern Cross' turn to ease on down the road with their production of The Wiz.
For school captain and first-time performer Lytana King-Togia, a step away from the footy field into the spotlight is definitely daunting, but something he's excited to try as he prepares to take to the stage as the Wiz.
"I wanted to step outside of my boundaries and do something different,” he said.
"I'm a sporting person so this is my first time doing something cultural. It's different but I wanted to try something new.”
Anna Lilburne is no stranger to performing on stage having been part of the 2017 musical Rock of Ages but this is her first time in a starring role as Dorothy.
Anna said she prefers to play Dorothy because it's something different to what she's used to.
"The character of Dorothy in The Wiz is very funky and poppy,” she said.
"And Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz is more pretty and girly.”
The story of The Wiz is a modern adaptation of the old classic by L. Frank Baum.
Producer Sarah Lilburne said the musical was something unique that the school had never done.
"Because this is the first year we've included students from junior levels... we needed to choose something that was appropriate for younger years as well as older students,” she said.
"We started our auditions in the middle of term one and we started rehearsals, very basic rehearsals, before the Easter holidays and we've been rehearsing all of this term.”
The magic begins July 27.
