Paw paw trees on verge spark $6300 fine threat

AN environmentally-conscious Brisbane resident has been threatened with a $6,300 fine for planting paw paw trees in a verge garden.

Bellbowrie homeowner Darren Montesin said he's baffled as to why the Brisbane City Council has been so heavy-handed over his attempts to beautify the street.

In a three-page letter to Mr Montesin, the BCC claims the trees, which provide more than the required 1.2m space between his property and the vegetation, are a potential "trip and abrasion" hazard.

Under BCC guidelines, a verge garden must not include the planting of trees or tall shrubs.

The scenario is similar to that facing supporters of Buderim's Urban Garden on the Sunshine Coast.
