Wellington Phoenix to make history in Hong Kong Sevens

WELLINGTON will take on big clubs from England, Spain and Asia when it plays in the Hong Kong Soccer Sevens from May 29-31.

The Phoenix will be the first New Zealand club to take part in the annual seven-a-side tournament, which is in its 16th year.

Spanish club Atletico Madrid, English Premier League team Stoke City and Shanghai's SIPG will also make their debuts.

The 16-team tournament regularly features the world's biggest clubs with Manchester City taking the title in 2014.

This year's line-up will include fellow EPL teams Aston Villa, Leicester City, Newcastle United, and West Ham United.

"It is a brilliant opportunity to compete against the world's best," Phoenix chief executive David Dome said.

The Phoenix will take a squad of 10 players - from the A-League roster and Academy program - and travel to Hong Kong on May 27.
