Bridge re-opened after reports a man was carrying a rifle
UPDATE: Police are still investigating a claim of gunman spotted on Forgan Smith Bridge this morning.
The bridge was cordoned off just after 8.30am by about 15 officers wearing bullet proof vests, after a member of the public reported seeing a person with a gun.
But the bridge was reopened at 9.15am and Senior Sergeant Jeremy Novosel was confident the public was not at risk.
"Obviously having a fleeting glance at that person who's a foot pedestrian across that bridge there's limited time people can actually have those people under observation," Mr Novosel said.
"We're still talking with the informant on this matter to get accurate descriptions and determine how far the person was observed for.
"There's nothing that we can obtain at this stage that can suggest there categorically was a person in possession of a firearm."
He said no other people called in and said they had spotted a person with a gun.
No description of the alleged gunman was provided.
EARLIER: Mackay police were called this morning with reports of a "person of interest" spotted on the Forgan Bridge.
It was reported the person in question was seen to be in the possession of a rifle.
Police blocked off the bridge and cleared the area.
Searches and enquries were carried out and the area was re-opened and deemed safe.
Further information to come.
