Gympie ranked among worst in state for drug driving

GYMPIE has been ranked one of the worst in the state when it comes to positive roadside drug tests.

And so police will target drug drivers this Easter.

Officer-in-charge of the Gympie Road Policing Unit, Sergeant Peter Webster, said a recent roadside drug testing blitz in the region returned "disappointing" results, so crews would be back in the area over the holidays.

"We had nine positive results for drugs from 19 tests," Sgt Webster said.

He said the majority of the drugs taken were amphetamines and cannabis.

"There is a fair chance anyone doing the wrong thing will be tested," he said.

He said the roadside drug testing crews would continue to operate in the region until numbers improved.

He said drink driving, the Fatal Five and general safety would also be targeted by police over the Easter break, right until school starts again.

The efforts are all part of a state-wide road safety operation for the holiday break.

He said an extra crew would head to Teewah Beach to work with Rainbow Beach police for the period and a Tactical Crime Unit from Maryborough will also be patrolling Cooloola beaches, Rainbow Beach and Inskip Point.

Further, the State Road Policing Taskforce would be travelling through Gympie daily and will patrol out to Rainbow Beach.

Sgt Webster assured drivers police would be out "in force" this Easter.

He also pleaded with motorists to be careful in the wet weather.

"Drive a lot slower and leave a greater breaking distance," he said.

"Be very careful; there is no room for error."
