AS THE Summer storm season approaches, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) have outlined helpful tips for people living in regional and rural Queensland to be prepared.

QPS said after a few storms in the southwest region, it was a timely reminder to have a full storm kit prepared.

"You'll need essential items such as battery operated radio, battery operated torch, spare batteries, first aid kit, can opener, tinned and other non-perishable food, bottled water and essential medications,” a QPS statement said.

"You should also consider copies of important documents, insurance details, birth certificates, prescription refills in sealable plastic bags.

"Check your insurance policies now and make sure they are current and have adequate cover.”

For those who own remote properties which could be isolated in a flood, labelling your house with paint is a quick way to assist emergency services.

"A tin of paint and a brush - in remote areas, if there's a chance that your property could become isolated, painting your property name on the roof will assist emergency services,” the statement said.
