Police would be free to chase crims again under LNP

POLICE would be able to conduct pursuits again under a new LNP policy, with expansion to the whole of Queensland if a Townsville trial is successful.

Speaking in Queensland's crime capital this morning, Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls also promised a police helicopter to be shared between Townsville and Cairns if re-elected.

Arriving to the press conference in a chopper himself, Mr Nicholls said the pursuit policy would be trialled for six months and then be rolled out statewide if successful.

"The argument is fairly simple - if we trust police to use discretion when using lethal force then we should trust them to be able to pursue an offender," he said

It joins the LNP's $25.9 million North Queensland Crime Action Plan announced this morning.

The plan involved a curfew for youths alongside cutting welfare to parents whose children end up in youth detention centres.

The helicopter will feature Forward Looking Infrared Camera technology costing $10 million.

The "eye in the sky" vehicle will complement the pursuit policy.

"One of the biggest issues that has been raised with us over the past 12 months has been the issue of the ever increasing crime rate," Mr Nicholls said.

"And the soft on crime attitude. "Assaults have increased, car robberies have increased."

The crime policy is in response relentless car thefts and hooning offences in north Queensland.
