Popular Western Downs event cancelled
ANOTHER popular Western Downs event has been cancelled in light of coronavirus.
The Jandowae and District Show Society released a statement via their Facebook page expressing the tough decision.
“The decision has not been made lightly,” the statement reads.
“After evaluating the developments of the coronavirus announcement from the Federal Government about the non-essential gathering of over 500 people, we have decided to cancel.”
The committee are still pending a decision which will be made Monday afternoon, about whether or not to continue the horse events.
Show committee member Sarah Shaw, said that the decision came under duty of care.
“We looked at our volunteers and most of them are over the age of 60, while it is early days we do not want to put anyone at risk.”
The last time the Jandowae show was cancelled was over 70 years ago due to the area being flooded.
This decision comes after the Western Downs Regional Council announced the cancellation of the Big Skies Festival yesterday afternoon.
So far, 35 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Queensland, including one in Rockhampton, and one in Kingaroy.
More cancellations are expected following Mr Morrison’s announcement.
