Positive signs for Roos coach in trial clash

A LOT has been said about North Melbourne's next generation but Sydney's almost stole the show on Sunday.

After last year's list clean-out the Kangaroos are looking to their young talent to keep them in finals contention this year and there were positive signs at Coffs Harbour International Stadium.

Fighting back from four goals down just before half-time to win by two points, coach Brad Scott will have been happy to with his new-look team's performance.

Established players Jamie Macmillan, Trent Dumont and Shaun Atley were prominent while young defender Ed Vickers-Willis was equally impressive.

New recruit Nathan Hrovat proved he'll be a valuable addition, while Shaun Higgins showed when fit he is one of the most damaging players in the league.

The Kangaroos stormed home in the second half, kicking six goals to three with Hrovat and Wood booting two apiece.

However, there was plenty of like for Swans fans as Callum Mills, Zac Jones, Isaac Heeney and George Hewitt took control of the midfield.

Star onballers Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dan Hannebery were instead pushed to the outside as stand-in coach Brett Kirk experimented with his line-up.

The Swans jumped out to an early lead thanks to two first-quarter goals from top draft pick Ollie Florent, who showed he wouldn't look out of place come round one.

The No.11 pick finished the game with 12 disposals, two marks and two tackles in a promising start.

Mature-age ruckman Darcy Cameron as well as Robbie Fox and Nic Newman also put their hands up for a debut against Port Adelaide on March 25.
