Protesters urge PM to stop asylum seeker deportations
FOLLOWING on from rallies around the country on Thursday, hundreds of people took to Brisbane streets yesterday to protest against the looming deportation of 267 asylum seekers - including 72 children - to Nauru.
The protest outside Brisbane's immigration office followed a High Court ruling on Wednesday that backed the legality of Australia's offshore detention system.
The Anglican Dean of Brisbane Dr Peter Catt and Greens Senator Larissa Waters urged Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to intervene to stop the children and their families being deported.
"Just because the High Court says it's legal does not mean it's moral," Senator Waters said.
On Thursday, Dr Catt announced that 10 Anglican churches and cathedrals were prepared to offer sanctuary to the asylum seekers, adding he expected that number to grow.
