QBCC reminds builders: get a licence or face jail

SHODDY unlicensed builders are being warned they could go to jail.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission issued the stern reminder on Monday after it used new powers designed to stop unregulated builders from working in the industry.

QBCC interim commissioner Kellie Lowe said the Supreme Court granted an injunction preventing a builder from carrying out work without the appropriate licence.

If the builder - who owes more than $11,000 - breaches the injunction, he could go to jail.

"This is the first time the commission has sought an injunction since it obtained the ability to do so in December 2014," Ms Lowe said.

"With the injunction in place, (the builder) faces the possibility of imprisonment if he carries out or undertakes to carry out building work without the appropriate licence.

"Unlicensed contracting and defective work have the potential to pose serious health and safety issues and create distrust and suspicion among home owners about contracting with the building industry.

"The commission is determined to maintain the livelihoods of licensed contractors who do the right thing and the peace of mind of home owners contracting with the industry."
