RACQ backs plan for inland, remote, rural roads

THE RACQ peak motoring body has thrown its support behind Queensland's first ever comprehensive plan for inland, remote and rural roads.

RACQ Executive Manager Public Policy Michael Roth said the Inland Queensland Road Action Plan (IQ-RAP) was a collaborative initiative RACQ was very pleased to have contributed to.

"This is a blueprint for the next 18 years of rural road projects in Queensland, and if implemented will be a driver of employment and productivity where we need it most," Mr Roth said.

"The Bruce might be the State's backbone, but our inland roads are the vital veins and muscle Queensland needs to stay strong and keep growing.

"This plan covers almost 82 percent of the entire state, a network of more than 16,000 kilometres of road, and future investment in its upkeep and growth is essential."

Mr Roth said the IQ-RAP used strategic analysis, local knowledge and data provided by the Department of Transport and Main Roads to identify more than 3000 kilometres of road and 300 bridges in regional and rural Queensland in need of upgrades to bring them up to scratch.

"Staggered over the next 18 years, the plan maps out around $5 billion in long-term works to cater for the needs of inland Queensland," he said.

"There is enormous economic value in providing better links to Queensland's agricultural food bowl, gas and mining industries, as well as improving safety and community connectivity.

"We're calling on all levels of government to commit to the on-going funding of projects identified in IQ-RAP, and are happy to provide our support and advice wherever needed."
