Rain won't stop them rocking

BIG Skies celebrations have drawn to a close after eight days of events across the region but Day on the Plain proved most popular once again.

The pinnacle music festival was held at Jimbour Station on Saturday and drew a crowd of 2500 people.

Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh said the council was very happy with the turnout, given the event was impacted by rain earlier in the day.

Fans flocked from far and wide to join the musical celebration with Australian rock legends including Jon Stevens, John Paul Young, Ross Wilson, Pseudo Echo and Deni Hines.

The weather didn't stop those in attendance from dancing and singing along to the well=known tunes.

The festival finished on a spectacular note with Ross Wilson, John Paul Young and Jon Stevens finishing the show underneath fireworks over Jimbour House.

This year, the Big Skies festival incorporated more community events into the calendar to provide visitors to the region an opportunity to see and do more in the Western Downs.

Events included a movie night at Jimbour Station, a golf day, regional industry tours, a street parade and markets, and a long lunch celebrating food from the region.

Councillor McVeigh said extending the celebrations gave the region more exposure.

"The whole week of Big Skies gave our economy a real boost and our visitors were given heaps of opportunities to experience our amazing region,” he said.

"To drive up the main street of Dalby on Saturday morning and not be able to get a park, to see all the 'no vacancy' signs on our motels was fantastic.

"The regional tours for agriculture and sustainable energy were a real hit and good numbers attended the various community events.”
