Top British rapper Akala performs workshops on Darling Downs
ONE of the UK's most influential grime and rhyme artists, award-winning rapper Akala is on the Western Downs this week as part of his first ever Australian live tour.
He is visiting with award-winning indigenous artist Jimblah to deliver workshops in Chinchilla, Miles and Dalby.
The duo come to the Western Downs on the back of successful shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to help people to develop and practice their skills in rap, sonnet and verse.
Over the last 10 years Akala has fused his verses with rap, rock and electro-punk influences and proved himself as one of the most dynamic and literate talents in the UK, with a reputation for stellar live performances.
Supported by passionate fans worldwide, he has toured alongside Jay-Z, Nas, Damian Marley, MIA and Richard Ashcroft and appeared at a host of UK, European and US festivals including Glastonbury, V and SXSW among many others.
His passion for the arts has led him to found his own record label, Illastate Records, as well as the Hip Hop Shakespeare Company and seen him feature on numerous television programs across MTV, ITV and the BBC.
Hailing from the Larrakia Nation in Top End Northern Territory, Jimblah's tone and singing style are so memorable, so drenched in soul that it's music for the heart.
The pair will host workshops on tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Western Downs Community Hall in Chinchilla; on Wednesday at Dogwood Crossing in Miles and on Thursday at MyALL 107 in Dalby.
