Real survives onslaught to make Champions League final

FOOTBALL: Real Madrid will go for its 12th European Cup/Champions League title on June 3 in Cardiff after coming through a tough Champions League semi-final with city neighbours Atletico Madrid.

In the last ever clash at the Vicente Calderon before Atletico moves stadiums, Real lost the second leg 2-1 but moved through to face Juventus in Cardiff 4-2 on aggregate.

The result did not come easy as the home side roared into a two-goal lead in the second leg with a Saul Niguez header and Antoine Griezmann's penalty scoring inside the first 20 minutes.

But a vital away goal from Isco in the 42nd minute sealed the deal for the reigning champions, who have now eliminated Atletico from the competition in four consecutive seasons, including the 2014 and 2016 finals.

Zinedine Zidane's side can become the first team to retain the Champions League title when goes up against his former club Juventus in the final.

"It's special, for sure, (Juventus) gave me everything,” Zidane told reporters.

"But I'm with Real Madrid, another club of my life. It will be a beautiful final.”

Atletico coach Diego Simeone said the players gave it all in their famous old stadium.

"The first 20 minutes of this magic night at the Calderon will be remembered forever,” the former Argentine international said.

"We have to be proud of the players.

"They kept hope, showing we weren't talking for the sake of talking but because we believed.”
