Reds star Karmichael Hunt wants a new deal

RUGBY: Karmichael Hunt does not know what is next for Super Rugby in Australia but he is keen to extend his stay with the Queensland Reds.

Hunt has tried his luck at rugby league and AFL but now said he was settled in union and wanted to earn a new contract.

"My body has had enough of the transitions," Hunt said.

"I am pretty comfortable at 94kg and playing.

"And I am loving my rugby. I have not had this much fun in a long time.

"But there will be less contracts available next year.

"There is uncertainty for everyone."

Hunt, who will line up for the Reds against the Kings at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday after returning from concussion, has had a bumpy ride since switching codes from the Gold Coast Suns to the Reds in late 2014.

The 30-year-old was fined, stripped of the vice-captaincy and copped a six match ban for a cocaine scandal just months into his Reds tenure.

Injuries have also taken their toll but now back to full fitness, Hunt said he wanted to prove his worth to the Reds.

"My journey is pretty well documented and there have been a lot of challenges but now I feel like I am in good stead to keep building on my performances and playing good rugby," he said.

Hunt said the future of Super Rugby in Australia was in the balance and all players were on the edge ahead of the Australian Rugby Union's decision on which franchise will be axed next Tuesday.

"It's a difficult time for fellow players and Australian rugby," he said.

"A few futures are up in the air because we are not sure how the ARU is going to go.

"As players we wanted to stand for a five-team competition in Australia but obviously they have gone the other way."
