Remember, university is a means to an end

NATIONALLY, we have more university attendees than ever before.

While in previous generations the honour of attending higher education was restricted to the elite of the elite, a degree is now perceived as the ticket to a better, more enlightened life.

And rightly so.

Without a degree, some fields of work are closed off to you, your opinions on some topics carry less weight, and you will have missed the opportunity to socialise with future policy makers as an aspiring intellectual.

But it bears reiteration that university isn't "free" any more.

Moving into an academic field is potentially lucrative, but without a clear post-study strategy, you might find yourself with a debt that out-weighs your earning capacity.

So when making the decision about how to spend the next few years, consider staying debt-free and carving out some independence in the free market.
