
REVEALED: Coast’s best sourdough bakers for 2020
With a delicious range of allergy-friendly breads, it’s no wonder the Sunshine Coast can’t go past Walter’s Artisan Breads’ sourdough.
Walter’s Artisan Breads director David Mares said when he took over the business four years ago, his goal was to improve their sourdough so it was a Coast-wide favourite.
“When I bought the business I really wanted to lift the quality of the sourdough, and that’s what we’ve done,” he said.

Their sourdough breads are all long fermented over three days and made with just few simple ingredients — organic flour, salt and filtered water.
The bakery, which was this week voted as the best sourdough maker on the Sunshine Coast, operates out of its Woombye factory and supplies to most Sunshine Coast IGAs as well as its three retail outlets; Darling Mills Bakehouse at Coolum Beach, Stella Blue Bakery in Peregian Springs and The Verandah Bakery in Buderim.
Mr Mares said the win was a great accomplishment or what Walter’s Artisan Breads had been achieving on the Coast.
“We’ve been working for a long time to get the sourdough right,” he said.
Mr Mares said it was great to see Sunshine Coast residents supporting local businesses, especially after such a tough year.
“We just need locals to support locals,” he said.
