Ricciardo bemoans grid move in Japan

MOTORSPORT: Daniel Ricciardo says a move up the grid might have cost him the chance of a better result at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The Australian had seemingly benefited after Kimi Raikkonen was slapped with a five-place penalty with Ricciardo then bumped up to start from fourth.

But Ricciardo said instead of getting a boost, starting from the slippery side of the grid meant he got off to a slow start before finishing sixth.

Nico Rosberg won the race over Ricciardo's Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen with defending champion Lewis Hamilton in third.

"Raikkonen's gearbox penalty was the opposite of a blessing in disguise,”icciardo said.

"It put me on the wet side of the grid and it looked like all of us on that inside line struggled a bit, especially Hamilton.”

Ricciardo is now third in the drivers' championship, 101 points behind leader Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton's poor start at the Suzuka track initially dropped him to eighth he fought back to get third in Japan but is now 33 points behind his German teammate with only 100 still available in the remaining four races.

Rosberg's ninth victory of the season means he can now afford to finish second behind Hamilton in all the remaining races and still win the championship.

The result means Mercedes have won the constructors' championship again.
