Rockhampton ‘Rome’ of the beef world

ROCKHAMPTON is the Rome of the beef world and just like all roads lead to Rome, all beef roads should lead to Rockhampton, according to LNP Senator Matt Canavan.

Fresh from his new Rockhampton office, Mr Canavan was one of many beef-minded people putting up their thoughts at the beef transport forum in Rockhampton yesterday, with the $100 million funding a hot topic.

The roundtable discussions had Rockhampton on the beef road map with plans to allow bigger "type one" road trains through the city in a bid to provide safer and more efficient access to abattoirs.

It's a concept federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry is all for.

"Currently there is heavy congestion in the city's CBD due to B-double vehicles delivering cattle to the abattoirs on Lakes Creek Rd," Ms Landry said.

"The abattoirs are seeking a road upgrade and an allowance for bigger type one road trains to deliver the stock.

"A lot of beef producers have been talking to me about the concept, which would include modifications beyond Neville Hewitt Bridge to allow livestock road trains to divert to Lakes Creek."

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said the Federal Government had announced plans to make available up to $2 billion in cash for "a range of important projects", with a percentage dedicated to the Northern Australia Roads Program.

"Australians have been talking about developing the north for a long time but this is an action plan backed by the necessary money to build real outcomes," Mr Truss said.
