Council expect to save $284K + on Gladstone pools

THE council's decision to lease out public pools to a private company is paying off.

Next month marks a year since Lane4 took over the management of Gladstone Aquatic Centre and the Mount Larcom Pool, a move the council expected would save $284,000 in the first year and more than $800,000 over three years.

But council officer Cale Dendle says he's expecting the savings to be even higher than expected when the next budget is released in July.

That will be a relief for mayor Matt Burnett, who in the lead up to his first budget has said his council is aiming for a zero per cent rate rise and looking to make savings where ever possible.

Public pools are notoriously expensive to keep afloat and the council's existing facilities are leaking money to tune of $660,000 a year.

In 2014 the Gladstone Aquatic Centre earned $902,000.

Last year's operating costs were $1,392,134, before private company Lane4 took over.

Lane4 was given a three year lease over the two pools in June last year at Gladstone and Mount Larcom.
