Severe storms on the horizon for Southern Downs

WILD winds and heavy rainfall could lash the Southern Downs tonight, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting severe storms to sweep across the region.

Winds of up to 120km/h, hail and isolated pockets of heavy rainfall are all possible as an upper tough moves east across the area later tonight and early tomorrow morning, according to forecaster Michelle Berry.

"We're warning of winds gusting from 90km/h - 120km/h - possibly higher," she said.

"The storms will be more likely during the day west of Goondiwindi, impacting Warwick later tonight as the trough moves east."

Storm activity will be short lived, with the Bureau predicting the storms to strike suddenly and move swiftly.

"There's a chance of heavy rainfall - but the storms will move fast and won't sit over one area for very longer," Miss Berry said.

"Showers and storms will continue into tomorrow morning."
