Shorten says 15% GST will affect Rockhampton

IN HIS visit to Rockhampton yesterday, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said a 15% GST would affect the cost of living in Central Queensland.

"We've seen our national income increase - the lowest in 50 years. For the last 50 years we are now living in a period where national income is increasing at the slowest rate ever," he said.

"This is the worst possible time for people in Central Queensland to have to pay a 15% GST on everything.

"There are families who work hard to send their kids to university. There will be students here who are the first in their families to ever attend university. Now they are faced with the prospect of a Malcolm Turnbull Liberal tax plan which would see the cost of everything related to going to university be set at 15% tax. That's too high."

Mr Shorten said a rise would impact on young people the most.

The Labor leader also took aim at GST as a tax on petrol.

"Families are battling to make cost of living payments and to make ends meet," he said.

"The idea that Malcolm Turnbull and his team are contemplating a new tax, increasing the tax on motorists...it's just not on."
