Stars have flocked to the Hyatt Regency for the 13th annual GQ Men of the Year Awards and the scene presented was in stark contrast to the outlandishness of the night before.

From 6pm AEDT the stars began traipsing the black carpet, dressed notably more demure than the ARIA Awards the previous night, aside from Sophie Monk who again wore a low-cut, high-thigh split dress by Alexandre Vauthier.

Spider Man actor Zendaya, Julie Bishop, Dylan Alcott, host Joel Creasey, US model Alton Mason, AFL great Adam Goodes and Jessica Mauboy too went back to back with the ARIAs.

Mauboy wore an on-trend black short power suit, dressing in more masculine lines to suit the theme of the night.

Camilla Freeman-Topper of fashion label Camilla and Marc also donned a strong silhouette in a long sleeved blazer dress paired with thigh grazing peep toe boots.

Instagram influencer and model Mimi Elashiry seemed to mix her dates up.

Her metallic leotard covered only by see-through chain link would have been more appropriate the night before - if at all.

Red carpet sources say nobody knew where to look as she turned around and bore her bottom to the waiting photographers, the material over her rear covering about as much as a swimsuit.

Model Sarah Ellen wore a very similar silver dress with a short skirt and see through overlay, however she did not expose anywhere near as much as Elashiry.

Adam Goodes, the subject of the documentary The Australian Dream about the nation's inherited racism, dismissed the idea that he was an icon.

"Definitely not an icon, a role model yes, I'm happy with that title," he told News Corp at the GQ event.

"Now as a father I'm happy I can share my ideas and my journey a bit more and hopefully that inspires (his kids and younger people) or helps them make similar choices."

The former Swans player said he was thrilled by the "incredible support" the documentary had received.

"It's now played in schools, hopefully it's something that will keep building momentum and we will keep having more conversations about it."

Host Joel Creasey said he was "looking forward to drinking the bar dry" after his opening monologue.

He joked "Hopefully I'll pash a Wiggle ... are the Wiggles here?".

Baz Lurhmann has returned home to film a movie about Elvis in Queensland.

"I'm gathering all of the great artists together and we're building Graceland in Queensland," he told News Corp.

"It's more like taking his life through the eyes of Colonel Tom Parker, who is played by Tom Hanks, and using it to throw up issues that are meaningful to us now."

Lurhmann said he was bringing old collaborators from his movie Strictly Ballroom for the movie.

Billed as the party of the year, the A-list ceremony will honour Zendaya as GQ's Woman of the Year.

The event is being hosted by News Prestige Editorial Director Edwina McCann and GQ Australia editor Michael Christensen.

It has been a huge year for Zendaya, 23, who stars as a drug addicted teen on the Drake-produced US TV drama Euphoria.

She also released a clothing collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger, dubbed TOMMY X ZENDAYA.

Zendaya turned heads at the People's Choice Awards earlier this month, wearing a cut-out dress by Australian designer Christopher Esber.

"I don't think anyone has had a bigger year than Zendaya," GQ Australia editor Michael Christensen told News Corp.

"There has been a coming of age with her. She starred in Spider-Man: Far From Home and has also been the star of the show Euphoria.

"This year is her year so it is amazing to have someone like her as our Woman of the Year. She is not just an actor, she is keen to make sure she has a huge following and that she is a role model to the younger generations."
