AN ABANDONED dog found starving in a Toowoomba home will undergo emergency surgery tomorrow.

The severely emaciated dog was found abandoned in a vacant unit near the University of Southern Queensland on Saturday.

The male bull Arab-type dog was rushed to West Toowoomba Veterinary Surgery and is now in the RSPCA's Wacol hospital.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said the dog, thought to be called Patch, was in a bad way.

"He's on a drip at the moment and will have a blood transfusion tomorrow," he said.

Mr Beatty renewed a call for information about how the dog was left in that condition.

The previous tenants did not own any animals and the agent reported the dog was not at the property during the exit inspection or during consequent "open houses".

Mr Beatty said the dog may have been dumped at the home.

He said it was appalling to see an animal in its emaciated state.

Prosecution could only take place if information was forthcoming from the public.

RSPCA Queensland regional inspector Shawn Jansen said the investigation would centre around how the dog came to be in this appalling condition and whether someone had deliberately left the dog there.

The group will also try to find out whether the dog simply wandered into the yard and become trapped.

Mr Jansen said a real estate agent managing a vacant unit found the animal.
