TWO of the strongest men in Australasia joined scores of Toowoomba residents to pump iron on Saturday.

With heavy metal music blasting in the background, contestants lifted heavy weights at the Australia Day Strongman Competition at the Irish Club Hotel.

Fans gathered to take "selfies" with Eben Le Roux, the strongest man in the Southern Hemisphere and New Zealand strongman Colm Woulfe.

They put on an exhibition, rapidly lifting 330kg on a bar.

The event was organised by The Bar owner Lochlan Wagner who said it was the biggest display of strength Toowoomba had ever seen.

Olivia Williams travelled from Brisbane to take part in the event.

"It's really interesting especially having the two strongest guys here," she said.

"I couldn't believe the weight they were lifting."

Toowoomba woman Karyn Gough joined a gym in Toowoomba and soon became interested in weightlifting.

"When I first started I wouldn't have been able to do a 90kg dead lift and today I did nine repetitions."

She said the strongman community supported newcomers.

"You don't know anyone but you show up and everyone is so encouraging."
