Summer draws up to 10,000 to Rainbow Beach

THOUSANDS of people are expected to make a splash at Rainbow Beach and Double Island Point today, capping off a strong summer break for the region.

"(We've) seen up to 500 people here (at Rainbow)... and over the Christmas holiday period 5000 to 10,000 people on the stretch of beach," lifeguard Kalen Schloff said. "They maxed out a few times."

Mr Schloff also said the large crowds had been wonderfully small on unruly behaviour.

"It's been a nice summer for responsible drivers and (we) haven't seen to much misbehaviour," he said.

"It's been as busy as ever but the crowds have been responsible."

With predicted temperatures in the low 30s and a north-easterly breeze in the afternoon, BoM forecaster Dan Narramore said the weather today should be nice for more than just boating.

"It should be nice in the water as well."

While there were still some concern after this summer's rash of stingers, Mr Schloff said it was unlikely they would make an impact.

"There is a northerly wind forecaste but it normally has to blow for a couple of days (for stingers to come in)."

He also asked people take care to ensure the good season continues, by drinking water, reading the lifeguard boards and taking care of children in the surf.

"Keep the little ones out of the water if there's bluebottles as it hurts them a lot more."
