Dalby explosion "not a bomb"

UPDATE: Dalby police confirm Tuesdays explosion was "not a bomb".

Acting Inspector Terry McCullough told the Dalby Herald the device was an "improvised firearm."

"It has been taken to Brisbane by specialists and will be scientifically examined," Act. Insp McCullough said. 

Investigations are continuing. 

WEDNESDAY: A man has serious injuries to his arms, face and upper body after a parcel exploded when he opened it.

The explosion occurred in Owen St, Dalby, about 2.45pm.

Homes within 50m of the explosion were evacuated, with residents not able to return until 8.30pm.

Bomb disposal experts were called in from Brisbane.

Police are investigating.

TUESDAY 4PM: Initial investigations reveal that around 2.45 this afternoon a parcel exploded when it was opened.

A Dalby man has received serious injuries to his upper body.

He was transported to the Dalby hospital.

Residences within a 50 metre zone are being evacuated and nearby streets have been closed.

There is no further information at this time.

Investigations are continuing. 

TUESDAY 3PM: Dalby police are securing the area around an Owen St address after an explosion earlier today.

A male person was treated on scene for trauma and is currently being transported to Dalby hospital.

Three houses have been evacuated.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from Brisbane have been notified and are expected on scene.

EARLIER: Emergency services in Dalby are at the scene of a suspected bomb explosion.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene at an Owen St address at 2.45pm today.
