A 17-YEAR-OLD jumped on the back of a police officer in an apparent attempt to help his brother who was being arrested.

The two siblings were loitering out the front of the Leichhardt Shopping Village when they were approached by police.

During the encounter, one of the brothers, Jordan Voysey, turned aggressive and began swearing at the officers.

When police told Voysey to calm down and watch his language, he responded by throwing a punch at one of them.

Police grabbed Voysey's arm and tried to place him under arrest.

He resisted by throwing his arms about and kicking his legs.

During the scuffle, Voysey's younger brother, Zackery, apparently tried to come to his brother's aid by jumping on the back of one of the officers.

As a result he too was placed under arrest.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, the two brothers pleaded guilty to obstructing police.

Jordan was also charged with a public nuisance offence, which he also pleaded guilty to.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said the incident took place on March 4.

When magistrate Barry Cosgrove gave the siblings a chance to explain their actions, the only thing either one could offer in their defence was that "it was a stupid thing to have done".

Mr Cosgrove could not help but agree.

Jordan was fined $750 for both charges while his brother was fined $500.

All convictions were recorded.
