Teen ready for Suns debut in Alice

GOLD Coast has called on a 19-year-old debutant to add steel to their fragile midfield for Saturday's clash with Melbourne in Alice Springs.

Will Brodie, the club's third pick (No.9 overall) in last year's draft will become the fourth player to make his debut this season and will join one-time housemate David Swallow as major inclusions.

The Suns were smashed in the contest by Port Adelaide in China and coach Rodney Eade said the inclusion of Brodie and the return of Swallow could rectify that against a hard edged Melbourne midfield.

"We thought our first quarter was poor in the contest, and that's one thing Will does bring," he said.

"He's a real bull at the contest, he's a great contested player.

"As a midfielder he's been playing very well in the NEAFL."

Brodie spent his first week on the coast living with Swallow and has modelled his game on the former No.1 draft pick.

"I've got to know him really well, he has taken me under his wing and taught me his ways, he's been really good for me," he said.

Brodie's fellow 2016 draftee Jack Bowes will miss with tonsillitis, while defender Rory Thompson - a late withdrawal from the Port game with hamstring tightness - will also be unavailable.

Brodie played all three JLT Series games and has averaged 23 disposals in his seven NEAFL appearances this season.

He said Eade had told him he was in the side for his contested ball-winning skills and instructed him to play his natural game.

"I have been told to play my game, and that's the way I have played for the last five or six years," he said.

"I take pride in my contested stuff and my ability to win the footy."
